FAQS

Everything You Need to Know

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

In January, we begin taking pre-orders for plants to be ready by mid-May.  This allows us to grow only the plants we need (and some extra to make sure everybody gets what they ordered!), and use none of the materials we don't.  Once you have an order in, we'll make sure you have the plants you ordered come May.  In the time in between, we're germinating, transplanting, caring for, and hardening off your plants until they're ready!

WILL I GET MY PLANTS RIGHT AWAY?

Unless you're doing some last minute ordering in May, probably not.  We're a small business and grow only what people order so that we don't waste water, seeds, or materials.  They'll be ready in mid-May, right around Mother's Day.

DO YOU DELIVER?

Sure! We'll set 2 pickup dates later in the Spring once we know when the plants will be ready.  If you're not able to make those, we can bring them to you for up to $10.  That'll cover gas and time.

WHEN ARE THE PICK-UP DATES?

You live in Virginia, so you know that the weather here is unpredictable, at best! So we won't have exact dates until April, at which point we'll email all of our customers who purchased plants.  We'll set two pickup dates in the area, just in case you can't make one!  Or, we can deliver for up to $10.

WHEN WILL I NEED TO PLANT THEM?

Depending on your plant, it may have been transplanted several times already.  Once they're hardened off, they'll be ready to go in their permanent spot.  Since we do the hardening, you can plant them as soon as you receive them!  In fact, they'll be itching for it because they're going to have some big, healthy roots that are ready to keep growing.  We recommend planting them within 48 hours of receiving them.

WHAT IF MY PLANTS DIE?

We strive to ensure that every plant that gets sent out to customers is healthy and happy.  We pride ourselves on our happy plants!  If the plant dies within 7 days of pickup, and you've been able to plant and water them in that time, we'll shoot you a refund.  No problem!

DO YOU USE PESTICIDES?

The short answer is no.  We adamantly oppose the use of manufactured chemical pesticide use, and are conscious of the quality and health of our soils, water, plants, and bees!  Every once in a while, we'll use Neem Oil as an insecticide, fungicide, and/or bactericide.  Neem oil is organic, biodegradable and non-toxic. It’s safe for people, birds, pets, fish, worms, bees, livestock or other area wildlife when used. We don't use it often, but sometimes use it as a preventative on our younger plants if it seems necessary.  While we don't necessarily use this brand, Safer provides some great basic information about its uses.

WHERE DOES YOUR SOIL COME FROM?

We use local soil as much as possible!  Our backyard is full of what we call "black gold," or soil that we've been cultivating since we moved here.  We amend it with compost, compost tea, worm castings, and sometimes sand.  We will not use Peat Moss, but we sometimes use Coconut Coir if a plant prefers lighter soil than we can provide.
