MORE ABOUT US
How it Began
While we come from New Jersey and NoVa, we started our little family in Fairfax in 2012. The Mrs. grew up on a tomato farm in Long Beach Island, NJ--a place where grass was as rare as a garden. They were known as the "tomato house," where they sold tomatoes and peppers on an honor system outside their little beach house. She grew up learning how to naturally amend soil, harvesting eel grass from the bay and turkey manure from the local farms to feed their tomatoes--which grew over 6' tall!
We brought that love for growing to our first home that we purchased in Nokesville, VA. This small farm plot has always been a dream of the Kraus family, and we made short work of making it our own! We now have a 700sq ft greenhouse that we built ourselves that accompanies our hydroponic and soil gardens. We also have a small apiary on our property.
It's always been important to us that we know where our food comes from. Our natural artesian well feeds our gardens. Our bees open-pollinate our plants. We only use sustainable, eco-friendly growing methods. Our food is organically raised and non-GMO, ensuring that our family has the best food possible. And we pass that along to you in the plants we grow!
Everything we've done, we've done as a family. Building, digging, growing, harvesting. All of it! When we grow seedings, we can't bare to thin them out. Several years ago, we learned that replanting those we thin out led us to having double or triple the amount of plants we needed for our home. We started raising and selling them to friends and family who wanted to start their own gardens, but didn't have the time or knowledge to get them started from seed. Now it's our spring-time business!
By purchasing plants from us, you're supporting a family who cares about our planet and our community. We care about how plants are raised and how we care for the Earth. We care about having food that's not only healthy, but healthy for our planet. You're supporting a couple that has a small local business and that teaches in our community. You're supporting a young woman who is learning to build, feed, and care for herself. You're supporting the things that matter!
HOW DOES PRE-ORDER WORK?
In January, we begin taking pre-orders for plants to be ready by May. This allows us to grow only the plants we need (and some extra to make sure everybody gets what they ordered!), and use none of the materials we don't. Once you have an order in, we'll make sure you have the plants you ordered come May. In the time in between, we're germinating, transplanting, caring for, and hardening off your plants until they're ready!
WILL I GET MY PLANTS RIGHT AWAY?
Unless you're doing order around the pickup dates in May, probably not. We're a small business and grow only what people order so that we don't waste water, seeds, or materials. You can order and then choose one of the available pickup dates.
DO YOU DELIVER?
If you're not able to make one of the pickup dates, we can bring the plants to you for up to $10 as long as you're not too far from us.
WHEN ARE THE PICKUP DATES?
You live in Virginia, so you know that the weather here is unpredictable, at best! So we won't have exact dates until April, at which point we'll email all of our customers who purchased plants. We'll set two pickup dates in the area, just in case you can't make one! Or, we can deliver for up to $10.
WHEN WILL I NEED TO PLANT THEM?
Depending on your plant, it may have been transplanted several times already. Once they're hardened off, they'll be ready to go in their permanent spot. Since we do the hardening, you can plant them as soon as you receive them! In fact, they'll be itching for it because they're going to have some big, healthy roots that are ready to keep growing. We recommend planting them within 48 hours of receiving them.
WHAT IF MY PLANTS DIE?
We strive to ensure that every plant that gets sent out to customers is healthy and happy. We pride ourselves on our happy plants! If the plant dies within 7 days of pickup, and you've been able to plant and water them in that time, we'll shoot you a refund. No problem!
DO YOU USE PESTICIDES?
The short answer is no. We adamantly oppose the use of manufactured chemical pesticide use, and are conscious of the quality and health of our soils, water, plants, and bees! Every once in a while, we'll use Bt if our plants are getting destroyed by caterpillars, but this is rare. We really believe in balance and allowing nature to provide the predators we need. So far, it has worked very well for us!
WHERE DOES YOUR SOIL COME FROM?
We use local soil as much as possible! Our backyard is full of what we call "black gold," or soil that we've been cultivating since we moved here. We amend it with compost, compost tea, worm castings, and sometimes sand. We will not use Peat Moss, but we sometimes use Coconut Coir if a plant prefers lighter soil than we can provide.
DO I HAVE TO PRE-ORDER?
Not at all! However, we are a small nursery and so stock is limited. Pre-order guarantees that what you want is custom grown for you! However, starting mid-April, we’ll post our inventory of whatever else we have and you can order and pickup right away!
